Spring 2008

Outdoor education

Camp LuWiSoMo offers the opportunity for schools to come and learn more about God's creation in an outdoors environment. This is a chance for students to get hands-on learning experience in all areas of science. Some units we offer are, canoeing, tree and plant identification, fish hatchery tours, archery and much more.

LutherHostel

Formerly known as the Young at Heart Seniors Retreat, Lutherhostel is an opportunity for adults who are empty nesters, retired, or just looking for some relaxation in God's creation. Each retreat has guest speakers, Bible studies, card tournaments, and much more!

Men's retreat

Our Men's Spiritual Enrichment Retreat is a chance for men to gather together in Christian fellowship and get back to the basics of life and focus in on being a Godly father, husband and Christian. This Fall's theme is a continuation of our Spring retreat "The Man God Wants Me to Be". We will be having sectionals throughout the weekend lead by Rick Adams, Director of Youth and Family Ministries at Trinity Lutheran in Mequon.

 Spring Work Weekend

Work Weekends are an opportunity for youth groups, individuals, and families to spend a weekend at camp for free! Participants will be assigned work projects based on information collected on their registration form.

Summer 2008

o       Joyful Hearts

§         For over 20 years, Camp LuWiSoMo has been offering programs for persons with special needs.  The Joyful Hearts program is designed for persons who have developmental disabilities.  This program provides a quality camping experience in a safe, Christian environment.  Our trained staff members are committed to ensuring that each camper receives personal guidance and assistance as needed.  Our Helping Hearts Servant Event program has helped us to further achieve this goal.  Senior high youth groups, along with their leaders, travel from all over the United States to assist our campers.

o       Ages 8 and up

o       Each camper is paired with a Helping Hearts Servant who will act as a day partner or helper.  Together, they will participate in many activities during the week including Chapel, Bible studies, hikes, swimming, arts and crafts, sing-a-longs, nightly campfires, and a dance.  Also included in the week’s activities is a trip to the stables where each camper will be given the opportunity to ride a horse if they so desire.  The cost of the ride is included in the camper’s registration fees.

o       We are offering eight weeks of Joyful Hearts this summer.  Be sure to check the appropriate box on the Pre-Registration Form for the dates you would like to attend.

o       Due to the nature of our program and facilities, some physical restrictions apply.  All participants must be ambulatory with the ability to handle walking long distances, as well as up and down hills.  Also, we cannot accept campers who are unable to take care of their own personal hygiene needs.  Once we have received all the necessary forms, we will review the camper’s application to determine eligibility for our program.

o       Youth Camps

§         Camp LuWiSoMo offers a variety of camps for youth, designed to be inclusive and to provide opportunities for those youth who have specific interests.  Youth who sign up for a specialty camp will spend two hours each day (Monday – Thursday) participating in activities related to the specialty camp.  All youth participate in a daily Chapel service, Bible study, evening activity, and campfire.  Specialty camps indicate the minimum number of campers signed up in order to run the camp.  If the minimum is not met, youth will be notified and asked to switch to another specialty camp or youth camp.  In a few cases, there is a minimum number of males and/or females.  These specialty camps require special staffing and need the minimum to run.  The maximum number indicates the number of spaces available in each specialty camp.  Once this number is filled, registration for the specialty camp will close.

o       Junior Brothers and Sisters in Christ is a shortened version of B.A.S.I.C. for those campers who are not ready to stay an entire week at camp.  This is an opportunity for younger children to get a taste of camp away from parents for a short period of time.  There will be a variety of activities planned for the weekend.

·         Kinder Camp

o       Ages 3-5

o       Kinder Camp is designed to give small children their first taste of a youth camp.  For each camper, one adult attends for free to support the child in his/her camp experience.  The adult who attends may be a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, godparent, etc.  The activities and meals are designed specifically for the children.  Add this to the list of firsts for your child!

o       Min. 2/ Max. 20

·         EZ Defense Camp

o       Grades 2-8

o       This camp includes a three-hour course that gives the student the skills to resolve conflict through body carriage, setting good physical and verbal boundaries, and taking action if all else fails.

o       Current statistics indicate that just the use of good verbal and physical boundary setting will diffuse 95% of unwanted assaults.  This includes bullying.  But the average person does not have the knowledge to successfully set these boundaries once they are affected by adrenaline.  The focus of this interactive class is to coach the student while they are role-playing scenarios that are common threats.

o       There are two modules for this class:

§         Bully Basics teaches the appropriate response to bullying while maintaining the “No Tolerance” for violence that schools adopt.

§         StrangerDanger:  Anti-Abduction gives the student skills to deal with unwanted approaches by strangers.

o       Min. 15 / Max. 30

·         Guitar Camp

o       Grades 2-8

o       Guitar Camp is offered to those who have the desire to play but don’t know how and also to the experienced guitar player who is looking for some tips and tricks on how to further their skills.  Youth are asked to bring their own guitar (acoustic preferred).  Youth will learn strum patterns, chords, and all their favorite camp songs, along with the opportunity to play during Chapel and campfires.

o       Min. 1 / Max. 12

·         Horse-A-Piece

o       Grades 4-12

o       This program is geared toward the camper who wants to learn how to care for horses and spend some fun time in the saddle.

o       On Monday morning, the camper will “adopt” a horse for the week.  Under the supervision of the staff, it will be the camper’s responsibility to bring in, groom, and tack their horse before riding each day.  Once chores are done, it will be time to hit the trail where the friendly stables staff will be there to guide and answer questions.  On the trail, we will maneuver around obstacles, improving control and management of the horse.

o       Each day will offer about an hour of chores and an hour on the trail.  Please be understanding to weather issues—it is a God thing—it is out of our hands.  However, if weather is inclement, we will still transport everyone to the stables to spend some extra one-on-one time with their horses under the shelter.

o       We tailor our program to fit your skill level.  All Horse-A-Piece campers will ride on Monday when the staff will evaluate skill levels and divide the campers into beginner, intermediate, and advanced groups for the rest of the week.

o       Min. 2 / Max. 20

·         Hunters Safety

o       Grades 6-8

o       This program offers certified instruction in hunter safety.  Those that meet the course requirements will receive a safety education completion certificate.  However, it should be noted that persons younger than 12 may lose some of the benefits of the certification (small game hunting privilege, authorization to shoot an antlerless deer during the first gun deer season after graduation) if they take the class sooner than age 12.  The department encourages people to wait until they turn 12 within 6 months of completion of the course before taking it.

o       Young people who complete the hunter education course and receive a certificate are eligible to hunt and use firearms without supervision at age 14.  The hunter education course instills in students the knowledge and skill to be a responsible and safe hunter.  The basic course consists of 10 lessons during a minimum of 10 hours.  Students learn how hunting accidents are caused and how they can be prevented.  Hunter responsibility and safety are stressed throughout the classes, which consist of lectures, demonstrations, group discussions, practical exercises, individual study, and activity assignments.

o       DO NOT bring your own gun!  Guns will be provided for you.

o       Min. 1 / Max. 10

·         Owl Camp/ Space Camp

o       Grades 4-8

o       Live the life of an owl!  This is youth camp in reverse.  Youth will have a graduated schedule that will allow them to sleep during the day and stay up at night.   Owl campers will participate in all of the activities that a normal youth camp would, but will also have the opportunity to do night hikes, outdoor cooking, and many other fun things that can’t be done during the day. Along with these activities, Guest Scott Randall will be leading a variety of activities that will expand their knowledge of God’s awesome universe.  These activities include slide shows, computer satellite tracking, and stargazing with a high-powered telescope.

o       Max. 100

·         Rocketry Camp

o       Grades 2-8

o       Raise your summer fun to new heights at Rocketry Camp!  This program is designed to be enjoyable for both beginners and experienced rocketeers alike.  Each camper will construct and fly a high quality model rocket in a program that features daily demonstration launches, team competitions, an introduction to special techniques and (of course) a pinch of rocket science, all done within a shroud of strict safety.

·         Survival Camp

o       Grades 4-8

o       Min. 4 / Max. 20

·         Swim Lessons Camp

o       Grades 2-8

o       Swim Lessons Camp provides an opportunity for the camper to learn swimming skills.  Swim lessons will be provided each day, weather permitting, and will be tailored to the

skill level of the camper.
