Introduction

When I was in grade school, I wanted to read the entire Bible, so I started at the most logical place, the beginning.  However, I got bogged down in mid-Leviticus, and my short-lived attempt to read the entire Bible came to an abrupt end.  Years later, I decided to resurrect this attempt, but with a more specific plan.  I realize that there are other Bible-in-a-year series, but I had some specific goals in mind.  Not only did I want to have a more complete and in-depth knowledge of Scripture, but I also wanted a better understanding of the context of each book and its relationship to the other books of the Bible.  I also wanted to coordinate the readings with the major events of the church year, namely Christmas and Easter.

I divided the books of the Bible into three broad categories: New Testament, Old Testament, and Poetic Writings (which are also Old Testament books), which I then arranged to be read side by side.  I figured if I were to get disinterested in one book (say Leviticus), the content of another book might help motivate me to continue.  For people who would rather spend a little more time studying each passage (or simply do not like to read a lot), the three categories could be read in consecutive years, making this a possible one, two, or three year series.

Since I wanted to maintain the integrity of each book, none of the verses within any book have been reordered (although the books themselves sometimes are).  To help facilitate my weak grasp at history, I ordered the books chronologically.  Books that are primarily historical narratives were arranged according to when the events took place.  Books that are primarily poetic or theological writings (namely the letters and prophets) were arranged according to when they were written.  Of course, scholars often disagree on dating books of Scripture, so I had to make some decisions based on the reference materials available to me (favoring a more conservative dating).  Books that overlap with historical events (i.e. the four Gospels or Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles) I arranged to be read side by side so that comparisons may be made.  However, this was not always possible since some books (particularly in the Gospels) are not completely chronological themselves.  Some books due to the chronology divide other books.  For example, the book of Acts is divided by many of Paul’s letters since he wrote these letters during his ministry recorded in Acts.

The readings fit the church year amazingly well.  The birth of Jesus is read on December 25th (although I have been told that the actual birth of Jesus could have been as early as May).  On April 7th, we will read the verse in Deuteronomy that says, "Anyone who is hung on a tree is under God’s curse."  April 7th is the actual day that Jesus was crucified. Likewise, the resurrection of Jesus is read on April 9th.  Although the date of Easter changes from year to year, it is usually around the beginning of April.  My confirmation verse falls on my birthday.  You may notice other interesting correlations between the readings or in relation to the church year.

I am confident that despite any shortcomings, anybody who follows through with this series will be richly blessed (Ps 119:105, Isa 55:10-11, Jn 20:31, 2Ti 3:14-17).
